Domenico Coviello

Domenico CovielloDomenico Coviello (MD, PhD) is a medical geneticist, and currently head of the Laboratory of Medical Genetics,  Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico, Mangiagalli e Regina Elena, University Hospital of Milan, Italy.

He has also worked at The University of Modena (1998-2000), and at The University of Genoa 1989-1997). His research activity has been dedicated mainly to laboratory activity (cytogenetics and molecular genetics), and to genetic counselling, with a particular interest in the education of professionals.

Domenico's scientific research work has been focused mainly on Mendelian human genetic diseases both in Cytogenetic and Molecular Genetics fields. The research involved: Down Syndrome, Osteogenesis Imperfecta, Familial Hypercholesterolemia, Neurofibromatosis type I, Familial Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. The Laboratory of Medical Genetics, Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico, Mangiagalli e Regina Elena, Milan is performing genetic tests both at cytogenetic and molecular genetics level on: prenatal and postnatal detection of chromosomal anomaly, thalassemia, cystic fibrosis, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, familial Parkinson disease, non syndromic neurosensorioal deafness, microdeletion of Y chromosome in infertile men, Gitelman and Bartter Syndrome, Familial Intrahepatic Cholestasis.

He worked in several international labs: 1978-Cytogenetic Laboratory, Guy's Hospital Medical School, London, (Prof. P.E. Polani); 1984-William Dunn School of Pathology, University of Oxford, (Prof. N.J. Proudfoot); 1987-1988-Department of Molecular Genetics, M.D. Anderson Cancer Centre, University of Texas, Houston, Texas, USA (Prof. Benoit de Crombrugghe); 1991-Human Genetics Branch, NICHD, NIH, Betesda, MD, USA (Dr. J Marini); 1995 and 1997 - Department of Genetics, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, USA (Prof. J.G. Seidman).

Domenico has been a parter in several other European Commission projects: 1995-1997- EC Concerted Action Biomed I on Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (Prof. W. McKenna, London. UK); 1997-1999- EC Concerted Action Biomed II EUROSCREEN (Prof. R. Chadwick, Preston, UK). 2005-2009 Eurogentest (JJ Cassiman, Belgium). 2007-2009 Eurogenguide (A. Kent UK). 2008-2010 Eurogene (Prof. G. Romeo, Italy)

1999-2005 Member of the Public and Professional Policy Committee of the European Society of Human Genetics, and since 2005, Chairman of the Educational Committee of ESHG.
